News & Trends
From carpet in the bathroom to avocado bathroom suites, there have been some questionable bathroom trends over the years.
But what are expected to be the big trends through 2021? We’ve scoured social media and Google search volumes to find out just which bathroom trend you should be following for 2021, no matter your budget.
Taking our top spot for the most popular bathroom trend in the UK in 2021 is bathroom wallpaper. With the highest search volume of all terms over the last year, bathroom wallpaper has seen a 33.8% increase in popularity. If you’re looking to hop on this bathroom trend, why not add a designer towel rail or stunning bathroom mirror to finish off the look of your new bathroom.
Black and white bathrooms have also seen an incredible rise in popularity, appearing second on our list, rising by 116.97%. Make a statement with a walk-in shower that compliments the colour scheme.
Coming in third for the most popular bathroom trend in the UK in 2021 is Terrazzo Tiles. Terrazzo tiles are made of a composite material of marble chippings set into cement. They originated in 16th century Italy as a way to reuse stone offcuts, but today, were the most popular bathroom trend on social media in our top three, appearing in over 24,500 Instagram hashtags. Pair these tiles with a free-standing bath in the middle of the room to truly bring the wow factor to your new bathroom.
Of all of the bathroom trends, however, the trend that saw the largest increase in search volume was ‘pink and green bathroom’, seeing an increase of 155%, whereas ‘grey bathrooms’ saw a decrease in search volume of 96.39% suggesting grey as a colour is going out of fashion.
If you’re looking to decorate and add finishing touches to your bathroom renovations, bathroom house plants could be the perfect addition, as plenty of plants adore the steam and humidity and can cope with the lower light levels of many bathrooms. This trend has also seen a 102.17% rise in popularity. Plants like the Crocus Boston Fern, the Peace Lily and Aloe Vera are perfect houseplants to keep in your bathroom as they provide a sense of calm, and in the case of an Aloe Vera, even have healing properties.

We also took a look at global search data to see what bathroom trends are up and coming internationally, and bathroom wallpaper is also the most searched bathroom trend around the world with 943,500 annual searches. Interestingly though, cocoon bathrooms have seen the highest percentage increase in searches of 178.36%, skyrocketing in popularity around the globe, while pink bathrooms are increasingly falling out of fashion, unlike in the UK, seeing a decrease in popularity of 93.45%.
We researched up and coming bathroom trends from various sources, before using Google’s Keyword Planner to find out the annual search volume for each term from June 2020-May 2021 and June 2019-May 2020 to be able to discover the current search volumes and how these have changed over time, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic. A percentage increase or decrease was also calculated to show this more clearly.
We then sourced the number of Instagram posts mentioning each trend using hashtags to see how often each bathroom trend was mentioned on social media to gauge popularity on other platforms. We then gave each trend a normalised score out of ten for each factor before taking an average score across all three factors.
