How to create a
luxe bathroom experience – even on a budget
By Matthew Currington, Technical Director,

According to Pinterest Predicts, there is going to be an increased interest in creating a spa-like experience at home this year.
A luxurious bathroom, that it both indulgent and relaxing can do wonders for our physical and mental well-being. But this doesn’t mean a minimalist bathroom, or having to install the latest state-of-the-art technology.
Instead, here are a few ideas on how you can create a luxe experience that is easy to imitate, without the hefty price tag.
Attention to detail!
Seeing luxury bathroom makeovers on social media can make you feel like you need to do an entire renovation to upgrade your bathroom. But small changes to upgrade the fixtures in your bathroom can do wonders.
If you don’t want to spend a fortune, focus on upgrading taps, mirrors and small accessories.
Pay attention to the details of your bathroom, such as high-quality towels, a plush bathmat, and decorative accents.
Also, switching out an old showerhead for a more luxurious rainfall option is a great way to turn the mundane act of showering into a relaxing spa-like experience.
These small touches can make a big difference in creating a more luxurious feel without overspending.
Mood lighting
Stark overhead lighting can often have the opposite of a soothing effect. While it’s practical for detail-oriented activities like shaving or putting on makeup, it’s not ideal for creating a calming environment.
For a relatively small but impactful upgrade, consider adding additional light sources such as recessed lighting, wall sconces, or pendant lights to create a layered effect which allows you to change the lighting depending on your needs.
Wall lighting placed alongside a mirror is a great way to add a glam touch to your bathroom vanity. It’s both a beautiful and practical option, as lighting from the side is the most flattering.
Installing dimmer switches can provide you with greater control over the intensity of your bathroom lighting. This can be particularly useful for creating a relaxing atmosphere for a long soak in the bathtub.
Focus on the materials
Adding materials like marble, travertine and solid wood are great ways to elevate the space but can be out of reach if your budget doesn’t stretch that far. Luckily, nowadays, you can find more affordable alternatives like marble or wood-effect tiles or countertops that look the same as the real deal but without the hefty price tag.
Look to invest in built-in wood cabinetry to help minimise clutter and create the illusion of a bigger space. Or, incorporate a niche or create a purpose-built pocket for your on-display products.
For a traditional look, consider replacing a standard plastic shower curtain, with a more luxurious-looking fabric curtain or replace it with a glass shower screen for a sleeker design.
Make a statement
Inspiration images of luxurious bathrooms often focus on a bold feature, and nothing screams luxury more than a double vanity unit or freestanding tub.
However, if full bathroom renovations aren’t in the budget, consider adding some wallpaper or framed wall art instead to inject some life into the space. Jewel-toned wallpaper is great for making the space feel opulent or choose something that is light and textured for a more elegant feel.
For those who prefer to merge function with design, a statement heated towel rail or roman blinds are great ways to make the space feel luxurious while still fulfilling a purpose.
Futureproof the bathroom
While luxury spa-like bathrooms have become increasingly popular, it’s important to design your bathroom in way that you’ll love for years to come.
Rather than changing the space to suit new trends, focus on how you can adapt trends to suit your space. Spend some time learning about your design style, so you feel comfortable introducing trendier items into your home, without them feeling out of place
And of course, one thing that will never go out of trend, is a clean bathroom. Dedicate time each week to ensure your fixtures are spotless. Not only is it hygienic but it will make the room look bigger and reduce maintenance issues occurring.
It’s also natural for clutter to creep in occasionally, so be sure to keep your beauty products neatly organised or stored away.
