6 Easy Budget Home Renovation Ideas to Try in 2023

With the new year upon us, many people will be looking to spruce up their homes and redecorate for the year ahead. However, as 2023 catches us in the midst of a cost of living crisis, many Brits will be looking for affordable ways to renovate.

DIY expert, Michael Rolland at The Paint Shed has shared his top tips for transforming your home on a budget.

1. Wall panelling

Adding panelling to the walls of your home can make a space feel modern whilst also having characterful features. Panelling the lower half of the wall in a hallway is also a nice way to add colour without having to paint the entire space. Choose a contrasting or tonal colour to compliment the current colour on the upper half to save money and time. Panelling is much easier to do than you think, and has increased in popularity since the Covid-19 lockdowns.

2. Paint your front door

The colour of your front door can have a big impact on the curb appeal of your property and in some instances can affect the price of your home. If the paint on the door is looking tired and faded then it is time for a repaint. A sharp looking door can really transform the look of a property so choosing a colour that works well is crucial. Colour carries a great deal of significance so the one you pick for your front door can have hidden meanings you didn’t even think of. 3. Install a stair runner

When you walk into a home, often the first thing you see is a flight of stairs. So install a stair runner. It will add an interesting feature in which you can choose the pattern and colour. You could go bold and get a striped bright coloured runner, or you can be more reserved and get a simple colour which would look equally as smart. It is also quite an inexpensive thing to do, with many retailers selling stair runners being priced under £100.

4. Paint your radiator

Painting your radiator is an easy and exciting way to transform your room. Adding a pop of colour can turn what was originally a boring functional feature of the room into something beautiful. Choosing a dark colour can create a sense of cosiness and warmth to the room whereas light or bright colour will make your radiator feel like a stand-out feature, creating a statement in the room. The best paint to use for a radiator is a water-based satin or gloss finish metal paint, as it is best suited to constant changes in heat and a nice finish. 5. Experiment with a rug

This idea is simple yet so effective and can be introduced to many different rooms inside your house. Including your living room for example, where you may have a small coffee table between your sofa and the TV, a rug placed there would be ideal. It almost feels like you’ve got a new carpet without forking out for one to be installed. Especially with new build properties, a lot of rooms lack character. Adding a nice looking rug can give a room some nice detail, as well as making it feel cosy. The rug doesn’t have to be new, or expensive. It’s an item that is often posted on social media sites for discounted prices.

6. Create a gallery

A gallery of artwork makes a room more interesting. One theme that is becoming ever more popular is framing pieces of wallpaper. You may already have leftover wallpaper in your home which you can use, and if you don’t you can always get some free samples from stores. Make sure the frames are simple so the patterns are on focus, and the pieces of wallpaper need to be placed on a white background for a neat effect.
