With millions of BBQs fired up each summer, the cumulative effect on the planet is significant. However, SuperBee has created a list of eco-friendly hacks and tips to help consumers enjoy their favourite pastime without causing harm to the environment.

The average charcoal BBQ releases 5.6 kg of CO2e per hour, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. In comparison, propane gas grills produce only 2.98 kg of CO2e per hour, making them a greener alternative.

  1. Switch to a propane gas or electric grill: Propane gas and electric grills produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to charcoal grills. Additionally, they heat up faster and offer better temperature control, leading to more efficient cooking and energy use. By making this switch, you can significantly reduce the environmental impact of your BBQ.

  2. Use sustainably sourced charcoal or briquettes made from recycled materials: If you prefer to stick with a charcoal grill, opt for sustainably sourced charcoal from responsibly managed forests, which helps to reduce deforestation. Alternatively, consider using eco-friendly briquettes made from recycled materials, such as coconut shells or biomass waste, which burn cleaner and produce less ash.

  3. Use reusable plates, utensils, and cups to reduce waste: Instead of relying on disposable plates, cups, and utensils, which contribute to plastic waste and pollution, use reusable items. Not only will this reduce waste, but it can also save you money in the long run. Opt for durable, eco- friendly materials like bamboo or stainless steel to further minimize your environmental impact.

  4. Clean the grill with natural, non-toxic cleaning products: Conventional grill cleaning products can contain harmful chemicals that may harm the environment and pose health risks. Instead, use natural, non-toxic cleaning solutions, such as a mixture of vinegar and water or baking soda and water, to clean your grill effectively and safely.

5. Compost food scraps and recycle waste: Set up separate bins for compostable food scraps, recyclable materials, and general waste to encourage proper waste disposal during your BBQ. Composting food scraps reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and provides valuable nutrients for your garden or local community composting facility. Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials and conserves energy.

6. Use a solar-powered or energy-efficient grill: Invest in a solar-powered grill that uses the sun's energy to cook food, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Alternatively, look for energy-efficient grills with excellent insulation and temperature control to minimize heat loss and energy consumption.

7. Choose sustainable and ethically-sourced ingredients: When planning your BBQ menu, opt for organic, locally-sourced, and ethically-produced ingredients. By doing so, you can reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation and support sustainable farming practices. Additionally, consider incorporating more plant-based dishes, as the production of meat and dairy products typically generates higher greenhouse gas emissions.

8. Repurpose leftovers creatively: Rather than throwing away excess food, get creative with your leftovers. Transform leftover grilled vegetables into a tasty pasta salad, or use leftover grilled meats to create delicious sandwiches or tacos. By repurposing leftovers, you can minimize food waste and make your BBQ more sustainable.

9. Encourage carpooling or alternative transportation: To reduce the carbon footprint of your BBQ event, encourage your guests to carpool, bike, walk, or use public transportation to get to the gathering. Fewer vehicles on the road mean reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a more eco-friendly gathering.

10. Create a water-saving ice chest: Instead of continually running water to wash hands or rinse utensils, create a water-saving ice chest by filling a large container with ice and a small amount of water. Guests can use tongs to grab ice for their drinks, and you can use the melted ice water to rinse utensils or clean up minor spills. This approach conserves water and keeps your BBQ area clean and organized.
