Experts share tips for artificial grass owners to avoid damaging lawns this weekend
As the warm weather continues across the UK, we start to see more Brits truly embracing the sunshine - visiting the beach, meeting up with friends in a beer garden, and hosting family barbecues in our gardens.
Creating a homely living space or garden when hosting is key, and previous research from Aviva found that 1 in 10 (10%) homeowners with outside spaces have replaced at least some of their garden’s natural lawn with artificial grass and a further 29% plan to or would consider making the swap.
So, for those who have artificial grass, is this a concern? It doesn’t have to be. As such, Grass247 have shared some essential information that you must know before having a BBQ on your fake grass, and the potential issues it could cause if you’re not careful.
When exposed to fire, artificial grass can potentially melt, and even hot food items on the floor for a long period of time can damage the turf, so the tips are crucial for those with an artificial lawn to keep in mind.
If you notice any damage from hot food items or flames, there is a simple fix you can try to remove any initial problems:
1. Trim the problem areas
Grab some scissors and trim the grass slightly to remove any damaged material.
By doing this, you can get rid of any melted turf, and keep your artificial lawn looking fresh.
2. Dispose of the waste properly
It’s important to dispose of any trimmed material to avoid any potential harm such as little ones or our four-legged friends putting it in their mouths.
Artificial grass can be sharp, and most of the time, our pets will avoid this, as they know it isn't food. However, it’s better to create a completely safe environment.
3. Clean the area
Clean the damaged area with an all surface cleaner for artificial grass.
Giving it a thorough clean will remove any bacteria or stains left behind, and get your lawn looking as fresh as it was before.
Sometimes however, the damage can leave a lasting effect, and may ruin a patch of grass. In this case, it’s recommended to call in the professionals to replace the grass.

“As long as you take the necessary safety measures, and take into account the type of barbecue you are using, it’s absolutely okay to have a barbecue on artificial grass.
“It’s recommended to use a metal standing barbecue on your fake grass, as this is raised and should stop any flames or heat from damaging the materials.

“However, if you choose to use a disposable barbecue, it’s best to create a platform for this - never place it directly on the turf.
“You can create a platform using a metal table or stand, or rocks to protect the ground.
“We want to ensure that all artificial grass owners are taking care of it correctly, so it’s important to make sure that BBQs are kept away from your lawn, and any dropped hot food or spills are cleared away quickly.”
