Your duvet is the key to wellness in 2025
Nils Stene, third generation CEO of Norvegr shares the below insight on how investing in your duvet is the key to wellness in 2025.
Norvegr handmakes the world’s finest, bespoke down duvets and pillows, loved by royals and rockstars.
Is your current duvet harming you?
If your current duvet is too warm or cold, the wrong size or weight, or made from synthetic materials, it will disturb your sleep every single night. Anything that promotes or prevents sustained, deep, restorative sleep every night will have a huge impact on your everyday wellbeing, energy levels and eventually overall health.
It is amazing how much attention and money we spend on thread counts and memory foam, and how little we spend on our duvet.
Synthetic duvets are actually worse for allergies and asthma
Those with allergies and asthma often suffer with disturbed sleep, and avoid down and feather products. A little-known fact is that allergy to down and feathers is, in fact, rare. The main problem for asthmatics is allergy to mites. Dust mites prefer a moist environment, which they’re more likely to find in unbreathable synthetic fillings. Medical studies show that synthetic pillows may contain eight times more allergens from mites than down- and feather-filled pillows. This is because down’s supreme breathability keeps it dry. At Norvegr we use hypo-allergenic down that is extensively cleaned to remove any trace of allergens.
Is a heavy duvet better?
Contrary to popular belief, a thicker, heavier down duvet is not better, nor is it warmer!
Down works as an insulator by trapping air. The more air it is able to trap, the greater the loft (springiness) of the down. The volume a fixed quantity of down will occupy is its fill power. So, fill power is a measure of volume. A high fill power does not mean warmer, heavier or thicker. It means airier, loftier, softer with the promise of keeping your body at a nice, even temperature and perspiration-free all night.
Fill power is a measure of quality. When purchasing a high-quality down duvet, you should look for a fill power rating of at least 600. Norvegr’s entry level duvet collection is the Classic Collection, with a fill power of 755.
Fill weight is a different matter. It signals quantity, the actual weight of the duvet filling. It determines how soft or firm, light or heavy a product is.
How can you tell a good duvet from a bad one?
Your sleep patterns are a big clue. A really good duvet doesn’t let you overheat or shiver with cold but keeps you at a perfect temperature all night long.
Curiously, you may wake up cold and clammy because your duvet is too warm. This is because you perspire when you’re hot and often don’t stir until the perspiration has cooled on your skin. Conversely, if you wake up cold and dry, your duvet isn’t warm enough.
What should I look for in a perfect duvet?
When shopping for a good duvet, look for natural fibres and materials - down is by far the best.
Air circulation is important, breathability and temperature regulation. Norvegr has perfected a unique channel construction which distributes warmth from chin to toe, instead of the usual box-stitch construction which traps air. Opt for a duvet one size bigger than your bed if you like to cocoon.
Why is a down duvet best for wellness?
When it comes to insulation, nature knows best. Unlike the rigid, flat structure of feathers which offer little insulation, down is found on the undercoat beneath birds’ feathers, mainly on the chest and belly. It consists of light, fluffy filaments that grow from a central quill point with no quill shaft. It effectively traps tiny pockets of air between the filaments, creating thousands of insulation pockets that simultaneously allow moisture to escape.
This superior insulation is what keeps your body from losing heat in a way that is naturally more effective than feathers or synthetic materials. At Norvegr, even our entry-level Classic Collection duvets are just 10% feather. From the next collection and onwards, they are all feather free.
Is it worth spending more on a great duvet?
You spend longer in bed than you do in your car. People tend to understand that investing in a good mattress and bed linen is important for a good night’s sleep, but sometimes end up buying a cheap duvet off the shelf that ruins the whole experience and ‘put up’ with it for decades.
With its luxurious feel and superb insulating properties, eider duck down is far more highly prized than feathers. It’s also scarcer, as birds produce a great deal more feather than down. Find out more about hand-harvesting this rare commodity here.
Duvet wars
Conflict is bad for wellbeing. If a couple shares a duvet that is wrong for them, they contribute to each other’s restlessness and this exacerbates the problem. A good duvet, or even better, a bespoke Norvegr dual-filled duvet based on each partner’s sleep preferences will allow both to stay at a perfect temperature throughout the night and stay asleep throughout the night. The quality of sleep increases tremendously.
Scandinavian couples have slept with two single duvets since forever. A couple that wants to share a duvet, but has individual preferences can still share a duvet by our custom making it with two different sides. Norvegr can make the duvet with two individual heat zones so that they are both happy underneath the same duvet.
