Home Interiors:
These are the lighting trends that will dominate 2025
By Matthew Currington, Technical Director,
With 2025 fast approaching, lighting will continue to play a fundamental role in shaping interior design trends. From integrated and user-focused smart lighting to wireless, energy-efficient innovations, next year’s trends promise to revitalise how we illuminate our homes.
Matthew Currington of The Lighting Superstore shares his predictions for the top four 2025 lighting design trends.
Integrated, AI-led smart lighting
The first smart lighting systems required brand-specific apps or hubs. Innovative systems have now transformed integration and interoperability issues into a thing of the past. AI is making it highly intuitive, efficient and more user-focused than ever before.
Search volume insights support this growing trend with terms such as ‘AI light’ surging by 52 percent in the last year and 34 percent in the last quarter. Search volume is forecasted to grow by 44 percent in the next year.
In 2025, we can expect lighting systems that predict and optimise schedules to match daily habits, minimise energy waste by responding to natural light levels, and enhance well-being and productivity by aligning with our circadian rhythms. With 2.5 million searches in the past month, ‘smart homes’ are the future.
Japanese-inspired aesthetic
We’ve seen growing interest in design trends where Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics merge, known as Japandi. In the last year, search terms like ‘Japandi interior’, ‘Japandi design’ and ‘Japandi style’ have grown in volume by 45, 35 and 32 percent respectively.
While this style is likely to continue to influence interior and lighting trends in 2025, we will also see the emergence of a purely Japanese influence: Wabi-Sabi. Search data reveals a growing interest in Wabi-Sabi aesthetics, with terms like ‘wabi-sabi interior design’ experiencing a 61 percent increase over the past year, ‘wabi-sabi style’ rising by 18 percent in the same period, and ‘wabi-sabi light’ seeing a 17 percent boost in the last quarter alone.
Rooted in the beauty of imperfection and inspired by the natural world, Wabi-Sabi celebrates natural materials and asymmetry while evoking a sense of tranquillity. Most famous for its muted tones and organic shapes, 2025 will welcome fixtures that are hand-crafted and boast irregular finishes.
Quirky cute wireless lamps
Wireless lamps have revolutionised modern interior design, offering a practical and stylish solution for contemporary homes. Search trends show a monthly average of 66,000 searches for the term ‘wireless lamp’ and interest has spiked by 25 percent in the last quarter.
And the quirkier, the better, with search data highlighting a rising fascination with Turkish lamps, as terms like ‘Turkish lamp’ have seen a 28 percent increase in interest over the past year, while ‘Turkish lamp mosaic’ has surged by an impressive 73 percent during the same period. Even quirkier is the ‘tulip lamp’ which has experienced a 38 percent surge in search interest in the past year and has been searched 21,000 times in the past month.
These lamps are perfect for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere while serving as a unique statement piece that bring personality and charm. Blending functionality with character, they are also ideal for lighting up a cosy reading nook.
Ultra-cosy lighting
This year, we saw the famous big light vs. little light trend explode, often showcased through hilarious videos. Combined with the industry’s flourishing love affair with portable, wireless lamps and fixtures, we’re going to see an even bigger obsession with ultra-cosy lighting in 2025.
Search data shows strong interest in ‘ambient lighting’ with the term garnering 319,000 searches in the last month and interest has grown by 27 percent in the last year and 21 percent in the last quarter. Similarly, the term ‘cosy interiors’ is reaching new heights, surging by 81 percent in search interest over the past quarter. Also, ‘dimmable lights’ has seen 91,000 searches in the past month and a 33 percent spike in search interest in the last quarter.
Clever layered lighting techniques will be a focus in interior design next year, showcasing how multiple light sources – such as dimmable lamps, wall sconces and string lights – can create warm, inviting spaces throughout every modern home.
