The world’s best down duvets last a lifetime or more

Nils Stene, CEO of Norvegr describes his company’s iconic duvet as “An heirloom item that feels like a dream and

lasts for decades”.

The term ‘heirloom’ is increasingly used in the luxury marketplace as consumers seek to invest in quality items that are made to last a lifetime and beyond. Here’s what the term means to Norvegr, the Stene family and the high-end bedding market.

Family legacy

Three generations of the Stene family in Trondheim, Norway have been crafting tailor-made duvets to their unique design since 1956 so we could call the business as a whole an heirloom.

“Over 25% of our customers are returning customers, it’s extraordinary in this industry.” Arild, Nils’ father says. “Parents will tell their children about us, who will tell their grandchildren, and those years of trust become something priceless.”

Nature’s gift

The tradition of passing down eiderdown to new generations begins with the eider duck. Unlike other down, eiderdown is plucked from the female eider’s breast to insulate her nest. This remarkable insulation is so effective that she can leave her eggs unattended for hours in the arctic conditions of Svalbard, trusting eiderdown’s ability to maintain a constant temperature.

Value of down

Through the ages, Nordic families have known the value of quality down and have learned to look after it. It has always been of such worth that it is often passed down from generation to generation.

In 834 AD, Queen Asa of Agder was discovered buried inside the beautiful Oseberg Ship in an ornate bed dressed with the most beautiful textiles ever seen from the Viking Age. Between the fabric covers and inside the exquisite pillows were thick layers of a soft, luxurious resource that was to become known as a true treasure – pure eiderdown. Royalty and nobility alike then knew that eiderdown was not only hard to obtain, but of exceptional quality.

Norvegr restoration service

If the thought of spending a lifetime tucked up in your parent’s old duvet doesn’t appeal, don’t worry! Norvegr offers a regular restoration service which refills and recovers each duvet, returning it as good as new every ten years.

The Norvegr team in Trondheim begins by extracting the valuable down from the product. They then steam clean it, dry it and sanitise it using harmless UV irradiation. They provide entirely new duvet and pillow shells, refill them with the clean down and top it up to your bespoke requirements.
