This month, The Warhol Kennedy Residence presents the first in a series of luxury volumes exploring the photographic legacy of William John Kennedy, edited by renowned editor, creative director and musician John-Paul Pryor. Warhol Kennedy Residence (Volume One) contains a selection of images from the collection that bring together both Kennedy’s images of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. “It was a pleasure to work on a book presenting William John Kennedy’s unseen cache of Warhol and Robert Indiana portraits,” says John-Paul. “They were taken at a crucial moment in both artists’ respective careers, and give us unusually candid and intimate insight into two men whose work was on the brink of making them titans of contemporary art.”

John-Paul has previously worked on titles such as AnOther Art Book and Jefferson Hack, The System for Steidl and Rizzoli, and has been published extensively in the likes of Dazed, Flaunt, AnOther, Tank and Port, to name but a few. The book contains his interview with the esteemed psychiatrist and friend of Warhol, Dr Phillip Romero, author of Andy Warhol’s Brain, who talks about the images in relation to the creation of the identity that Warhol would bring to the world stage.  “There are few more famous, yet enigmatic figures than Warhol in the canon of modern art, and this collection of images really gives us a widow into the man before he became an icon. In that sense alone they are fascinating. The addition of Dr Romero’s insights into what spurred Warhol’s creativity adds another dimension to the work.”

About William John Kennedy
William John Kennedy was a freelance photographer who formed a friendship with then unknown artists Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. He used to take photographs of Warhol and his entourage as well as Indiana for his own personal practice. Years later, Kennedy rediscovered the negatives. An exhibition entitled Before They Were Famous was constructed around these newly discovered negatives and transparencies and was featured at exhibitions in London, New York City as well as the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are now exhibited at the permanent London gallery The Warhol Kennedy Residence at 190 The Strand.
