Nocturnal pests that could be lurking under the sink

Pest experts are encouraging householders to take action if they find silver-grey insects trapped in baths and basins.

British Pest Control Association (BPCA) says silverfish can be a sign of a damp problem in the home and thrive in areas that are warm and moist.

The insects are nocturnal but are occasionally discovered during the day as they cannot climb smooth surfaces and can become trapped in fixtures such as shower trays and sinks.

Natalie Bungay, Technical Manager at BPCA said:

“Silverfish don’t pose a specific risk to human health, but they are a sign that there could be a persistent damp problem in the home.

“The best way to prevent silverfish, or to get rid of them, is to identify any damp issues quickly and take swift action to resolve them.

“There are products available to help householders deal with a silverfish infestation, but instructions on the label MUST always be carefully followed to ensure the safety of people and pets within the home.”

It is vital to ensure correct identification of the species before considering any DIY solution to an infestation of silverfish.

Natalie added: “Adult silverfish are wingless, cigar-shaped insects, around 12mm long with a distinctive silver-grey colour. They have three long bristles at the tail end and can move swiftly.

“However, they can sometimes be mistaken for the Firebrat – a closely related species which is flatter and speckled without the metallic appearance and favours hot, dry conditions.”

If in doubt, or if an infestation is spiralling out of control, contact a BPCA member who will be a trained and qualified pest professional carrying the correct insurances, assessed to the British Standard in pest management EN 16636, follow BPCA’s Codes of Best Practice and endorsed by the Government via the TrustMark quality scheme.
