Property expert reveals five ways to keep the cold out of your home
Summer has ended, and we’re now about to enter the colder months of the year. Over the next week, some parts of the UK will feel temperatures as low as three degrees, which is the coldest weather in months.
Households that are not properly prepared will especially feel the chills, and be forced to turn on their heating for longer, costing a lot of money. This is especially important due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, which is still affecting a lot of people across the country.
So to give you that helping hand, Property Expert, Joshua Houston from Household Quotes has revealed five ways to keep the cold out of your home.

1. Curtains
Windows are a common place for the outside cold to get into your home, this is because of small gaps that can let in air. Close your curtains particularly at night, as this is when it will be the most cold. It’s a simple way for you to provide yourself with that extra layer of warmth, as it can create a sort of insulation between your window and curtain. If you have the spare funds, consider investing in heavy curtains as these will do an even better job at keeping that unwanted cold away.
2. Rugs
Your floor is another area of your home where heat can be lost and can make your home feel chilly. You might notice on cold days, that your floor is not nice to walk on due to it freezing your feet. So instead add rugs to areas that don’t already have a carpet, this provides a layer of insulation between your bare floor and the room above. It will also make your home feel cosy and a more pleasant place to walk around, without freezing your feet.
3. Insulate your pipes and loft space
Another solution is to thoroughly insulate your home, this can be by adding pipe sleeves to prevent your pipes from getting too cold. As well as adding insulation to areas particularly vulnerable to the cold like your loft, crawlspaces and underneath floorboards. Loose-fill insulation is very good for this, and is a more affordable type of insulation, with a big bag being able to be picked up for around £30. It’s easy to place in the smaller areas of a loft and does a good job of keeping the cold out of your home, as well as the heat in.
4. Close your doors
Closing your outside doors might be obvious, but it’s also important to keep your internal doors closed. Household members often gather in one room in the evening, and this is usually either the kitchen or living room. This means you only have to heat a small area of your home, and closing the doors keeps the heat in and the cold out.
5. Stop unnecessary drafts
Drafts from the outside are one of the main reasons why some homes can get cold quickly. Go around your property and identify areas that may allow unnecessary drafts into your home. These could be cat flaps, chimneys or letterboxes, so during the colder months make sure that these are secure and so that they don’t let in cold air. Sometimes this won’t always be possible like with your letterbox, but it can at least be secured at night when there’s no post being delivered.
