Install double glazing to keep house cool, say experts
With the UK in the grips of a heatwave, Anglian Home Improvements have compiled some tips to keep your home cool to supplement any planned articles about the heatwave:
-
Invest in double glazing: “If your main concern is keeping your home cool during the warmer seasons, double glazing is the perfect solution for this,” says Rachael Munby, chief marketing officer at Anglian Home Improvements. “Double glazed windows come with two panes of glass and one insulating layer of gas. This gas prevents warm air from escaping while the double glazing prevents heat from transferring from one side to the other. This means that in hot weather, it limits the amount of heat from the outdoors coming in and in winter it prevents heat from escaping out of the property.”
-
Install external blinds, a much more effective way to keep your home cool than internal blinds as they stop the sun's rays before they've entered the home.
-
Invest in house plants, which release excess water into the air from their leaves when it gets hot, cooling the air around them and, in turn, the house.
-
Try a water feature the next time you update the garden. Similar to the house plants, the air that comes into the house goes over the water, bringing moisture content and coolness with it and creating natural air conditioning.
2023 was the second warmest year on record, but it won't stay that way for long with global temperatures rising. Some of these tips may seem too long-term for the current week of heatwave predicted, but they'll see homeowners through the next few years of record heats.
