Pub in my backyard? I can’t be-leaf my ears!
Garden embarrassment is holding the nation back from unleashing their garden’s full potential

LONDON, United Kingdom - Data released today from SharkNinja, Inc., a global product design and technology company, reveals that over half (57%) believe that they don’t use their garden as much as they should do. To inspire the nation, SharkNinja is touring major cities across the UK in July and August with pop-ups including demonstrations from renowned Chef, Mark Lloyd, who’s firing up the grills and pizza ovens to help the nation up their hosting game.

The study of 2,000 UK adults with a garden also delved into what our spaces look like – with the average garden being 23.5 metres long and home to as many as 13 different species of plant. In addition, it revealed that almost half (44%) grow their own fruit and veg at home.

Showing that the nation has green and pleasant land but doesn’t know how to use it, a further 15% worry their outdoor space isn’t fit for hosting, with a third (34%) saying they would host more get-togethers if they had a nicer garden, according to the poll commissioned by SharkNinja.

To help elevate our outdoor spaces, SharkNinja is on a mission to inspire us to make the most of our outdoor space and has worked with Award Winning Interior Designer, Journalist & Home Stylist, Anouska Lancaster to give her expert tips on how simple changes can help transform our outdoor spaces into a hosting haven this summer:

Styling tips from Anouska Lancaster:

  • Introduce playful colour - Outdoor spaces allow us to be braver and more experimental with colour and pattern. Go for uplifting colours like yellow, green or pink that will uplift your garden. If you’re nervous of going too bold, introduce an accent colour with soft furnishings.

  • Create a low-level seating area with comfy seating - Extend your home by creating a room outside with comfy, informal seating for lounging. Use an outdoor rug to cover up a tired decking or anchor a sunny spot in the garden, and then build your new ‘room’ around it. Keep guests cool on a hot day with an outdoor fan such as the Shark FlexBreeze fan, which can be placed near your seating area.

  • Get that pub garden feeling at home - Why dine out when you can create pub grub in your outdoor space this summer? The Ninja outdoor products, such as the Ninja Woodfire Pro Connect XL Electric BBQ Grill & Smoker makes al fresco dining so easy, even for the most amateur chef like me.

  • Go big on tablescaping - Don’t be scared to go large with your furniture and accessories, even in a small space. To go the extra mile, decorate the table with placemats, napkins, lanterns, and if possible, fresh flowers in various jugs. If you’ve chosen an accent colour for your summer garden, incorporate this in your table scaping.

  • Light up your space - Creative lighting can transform your garden and maximise its potential as an extra space to enjoy in the evening. I personally love the ambience created by festoon lights, they give off enough light to eat and drink but are subtle enough to create a warm and relaxing ambience.

Tracey Scully, UK Managing Director at SharkNinja said “With our research showing that people aren’t using their outdoor spaces as much as they should, we want to give people the chance to see how they can easily transform their garden into a hosting hotspot through small, simple changes. Adding a cooking station to encourage al fresco dining is a great way to get people out into their gardens.”

Tracey continues: “Who needs to go to the pub? The new Ninja Woodfire Pro Connect XL Electric BBQ Grill & Smoker has streamlined the outdoor cooking process even further with its very first grilling companion app alongside our most advanced BBQ grill ever for cooking enthusiasts to enjoy at home. For anyone looking for pub garden cooking inspiration, head to the Ninja pop-ups where chefs will be firing up the grills in July and August.”

The Better Outdoors Pop-Ups kicked off in Liverpool on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th July before moving to London, followed by Birmingham and Cardiff. The pop-ups will be taking place between 12PM –7PM - with demonstrations taking place throughout the day from renowned chefs - as well as interactive games and the chance to win prizes in fun competitions.
