Don't get caught out this year, as weather experts are predicting one of the worst storm seasons the UK has seen. Anglian Home Improvements have compiled some must haves for your home, to ensure you're prepped and can avoid as much damage as possible.
The UK’s storm season officially starts in September, so there’s never been a better time to get prepared.
How to help protect your home from severe weather:
-
Invest in wind resistant roofs such as slate or tile, or even a synthetic roofing options using materials such as polyurethane, which can withstand wind speeds up to 115mph
-
Park your car in a garage and invest in impact-resistant garage doors made from steel or aluminium
-
Ensure gutters and pipes are free from debris, as the water build up can cause flooding. Look into a gutter protection system to keep your gutters from being blocked by wet leaves, so there’s no risk of forgetting. Deepflow guttering in particular (used by Anglian) is designed to cope with increasingly high rainfall volumes, with an average flow rate of 1.9 litres per second.
-
Ensure everything is fastened and locked securely. Try shoot bolt locks for any new windows installed, Yale 3 star cylinder locks on all outfacing doors.
-
Invest in PVCU Stormproof casement opening windows, which are double weather sealed for added protection, and toughened glass which won’t shatter.
-
If you have pets, close your curtains, blinds or shutters to keep them calm and create a safe space for them somewhere dark and quiet.
-
Check for overhanging trees, especially over a conservatory. The accumulation of leaves and twigs can block guttering and cause damage, but high wind speeds could cause overhanging branches to hit and break glass.
Rachael Munby, Chief Marketing Officer at Anglian Home Improvements, comments:
“Extreme weather is becoming more of a reality for the average homeowner in the UK, and weather experts are predicting it’s only going to get worse.
"It’s really important that all homeowners make the necessary steps to future-proof their houses against extreme weather, by understanding the risks and ensuring things like windows and doors can stand up to 100 mph winds, excessive rainfall, and threats of flooding.
“Weather proofing a home does come with a cost, but it’s one your savings fund will thank you for later.
"At Anglian, many of our products come with things like shoot bolt locks, and 3* cylinder locks as standard to offer that added protection, but if you’re unsure on the best way to ‘storm proof’ a home, seek advice from the experts.”
