Surge in popularity of shepherd huts is linked to eco-friendly trends, according to experts
A surge in the popularity of shepherd huts is linked to several factors, including the growing focus on eco-friendly trends and the importance of spending time in nature, according to the experts at Crane Garden Buildings.
The luxury garden buildings company has seen a marked uptick in sales of its shepherd huts, which the company is ascribing to a number of reasons.

Environmental concerns are top of the list, as in 2024, 80 per cent of consumers expressed being very or somewhat concerned about the environmental impact of the products they purchase, up from 68 per cent in 2023.
Gina Mills, National Sales Manager for Crane, said: “In the last few weeks we’ve seen a marked increase in the sale of shepherd huts, which we’re attributing to a number of factors. Chief among them is that the compact and energy-efficient design of shepherd huts align with people’s growing interest in eco-friendly living. At Crane, we are committed to creating sustainable buildings, carefully selecting eco-friendly materials and using responsible building practices to minimise environmental impact.

“Not only that but anecdotal evidence from our sites across the UK says that more people want to connect with nature, with a recent study showing that 87 per cent of adults consider access to nature important for their physical and mental health. A shepherd hut is the ideal building to get close to nature, surrounding yourself with tranquil countryside and the gentle hum of the great outdoors.”
According to the People and Nature Survey for England (April 2021 - March 2022), 94 per cent of adults who visited green spaces in the previous 14 days agreed that spending time outdoors was good for their physical health, and 92% agreed it was beneficial for their mental health.
