Energy Saver’s Week:

Lighting expert reveals little-known way to combat high electricity bills

“Energy Saver’s Week falls between the 20th and 26th of January, and with another price hike expected in April, it's time to start adopting energy-saving habits to soften the blow of increasing energy costs.

“Not many people realise this, but habitually dimming your lights helps save electricity. That’s because the bulb requires less wattage and, therefore, less electricity while it is on. This is the main rationale behind the UK-wide streetlight dimming scheme currently in practice.

“Smart lights are straightforward to dim, as they don't require the costly installation of a physical dimmer switch, and all you need is a new lightbulb and a smart device with an app, allowing you to dim or switch off lights remotely. Plus, automated ambient light sensors can minimise energy waste by responding to natural light levels and adjusting the amount of light emitted by the bulbs.

“If you don't want smart lights, at the very least you must ensure that any incandescent light bulbs are swapped out for LED ones. LED lights use 70 – 80% less energy and last up to 24 times longer. To replace like-for-like, a 40W incandescent bulb can be replaced with a 6W LED, while a 60W incandescent bulb can be replaced with a 9W LED. Even larger bulbs can be swapped easily too—such as trading a 100W incandescent for a 15W LED or a 150W for a 22W version.

“Historically, LED light was considered cold and harsh, but the technology has evolved massively and there are warm, yellow-toned light versions available to buy. Look for LED bulbs between 2700 – 3000 Kelvin (K).”
